Baba Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar, Jharkhand, is a rare shrine where a Jyotirlinga (Baba Baidyanath) and a Shakti Peetha (Sati's heart is said to have fallen here) coexist within the same complex. The Shiva Purana narrates the celebrated story of Ravana's tapasya: the demon king performed severe penance in the Himalayas and prayed to Shiva to accompany him to Lanka. Shiva agreed on the condition that the lingam would remain wherever Ravana first set it down. Vishnu intervened by disguising himself as a Brahmin and tricking Ravana into placing the lingam on the ground at Deoghar; when Ravana returned, the lingam had rooted itself permanently into the earth. Ravana's futile attempts to lift it left the characteristic thumb-shaped depression at the top of the lingam. The oldest recorded reference to Baidyanath is in the seventh-century Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang's travelogue. The present temple complex, with its distinctive pear-shaped shikhara and 22-sided sanctum, was extensively rebuilt in the sixteenth century by the local Deogarh Raj family.

The Baidyanath sanctum is a strikingly unusual 22-sided (baaisi-koni) tower with a pear-shaped or 'atrapatra' shikhara — a form unique in Indian Shaivite architecture. The entire complex houses 22 individual temples including the main Baidyanath shrine, the Parvati Mandir (Shakti Peetha), and shrines to Ganga, Kali, Annapurna, Surya, and the Navagraha. The three main temples of Baidyanath, Parvati and Lakshmi-Narayan are tied together by ceremonial red-and-yellow thread that devotees offer as part of the traditional mannat ritual.
